Surbiton 1 Bowdon Hightown 1

Surbiton Ladies dropped to second in the Investec Women’s Hockey League Premier Division after being held to a draw on home turf for the second week running and the University of Birmingham beat Clifton Robinsons 5-0.

Surbiton trail by a single point, having stuttered in the absence of six players on duty with Great Britain in Argentina. Bowdon Hightown came to Sugden Road in sixth place and earned a vital point as Surbiton struggled to score in spite of creating plenty of scoring chances.

Bowdon goalkeeper, Kirsty Mackay had an excellent game, whilst Surbiton were unfortunate to strike the crossbar twice.

Bowdon made the early running, denying Surbiton possession before the hosts settled down. Surbiton had two penalty corner awards in the first half, Sarah Page’s shot deflected from the first and the ball not running for Emily Atkinson after Natalie Maclean’s initial shot from the second.

Bowdon defended well with Julie Whiting, Sam Quek and captain Sian French all working hard. Anabel Herzsprung was a threat for Surbiton in the first half and Lucy Holder went close, but at half time the game was goalless.

Surbiton had more impetus in the second half, Mackay saving from Izzy Petter and Beckie Middleton’s shot rebounding off the underside of the crossbar.Beckie-Middleton-7

In the 44th minute, the deadlock was broken, Middleton and Holly Payne combining to find Stephanie Addison in the circle, Mackay finally beaten to seemingly relieve the pressure on the league leaders.

Bowdon trailed for just five minutes, Julie Whiting making an attacking run before the ball found its way to Charlene Mason to finish from the right of the circle.

Bowdon could have taken the lead two minutes after half time from a penalty corner, but shot past the left post. With ten minutes remaining, Surbiton managed to recover a mistrapped penalty corner injection before Mackay denied Surbiton captain, Georgie Twigg with another fine save.

Middleton had another close encounter with the Bowdon crossbar late in the second half, but Surbiton had to settle for a point as Bowdon pulled further away from the bottom of the table.

Surbiton visit Clifton Robinsons next weekend (24 February) push back 1 pm, against a team which due to recent from has been sucked in to the relegation scrap, just three points off the bottom of the table.
