Razie’s first hat trick in Azlan Shah Cup

Razie Rahim has never disappoint the Malaysian team and his home fans.

Once again, he put on a stylish performance for Malaysia to chalk up a comfortable 4-1 win against Ireland on match day one of the 27th edition of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh, Perak yesterday.

The defender was hailed as Malaysia’s hero in front of thousands of home fans at the Azlan Shah Stadium after registering a hat trick through one solo field goal and two penalty corners.

It was Razie’s first hat trick in the Azlan Shah Cup since making his debut for the national team in 2006 at the same tournament.

His last hat trick was during the 2017 South East (SEA) Games when he helped Malaysia thrashed Myanmar 14-0 to claim the gold medal in August.

“I’m very satisfied with my performance because I rarely score a hat trick in international matches.

“The win is a good sign for us as we prepare for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, the Asian Games in Jakarta and the World Cup.

“I hope that we can continue playing with high motivation and determination and give our best in every game. I am also pleased with our positive start in this tournament,” said the newly-appointed Malaysian captain.

Malaysia, ranked 12th in the world, has never won the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup since the tournament was first introduced in Kuala Lumpur in 1983.

Stephen Van Huizen’s squad  notable achievements in the tournament came in the form of 5-time runners-up in 1985200720092013 and 2014.

Besides Malaysia and Ireland who are ranked 10th in the world, the other competing teams are world number one and nine-time champion, Australia, the 2016 Olympic gold medalist, Argentina (second), Asian giant, India (sixth) and reigning champion, England (seventh).
