Club Campo De Madrid Upset Hosts Surbiton

EuroHockey Club Cup Quarter-Final

Club Campo de Madrid 2 Surbiton 0

Hosts Surbiton’s hopes of reaching the EuroHockey Club Cup semi-finals for the second successive season were dashed by a clinical Club Campo De Madrid performance in front of a large crowd at Sugden Road on Thursday evening.

The teams had first met in Bilthoven in 2015 in Surbiton’s first ever European match when the Spanish club needed a shootout to progress from the quarter-finals after a 1-1 draw In normal time.

Having the opportunity to watch a top flight European club tournament on English soil, many spectators arrived after work to boost Surbiton’s home support, but a stunning tenth minute finish from Lucia Abajo Saenz De Tejada gave Madrid an ideal start.

Madrid’s well organised defence thwarted Surbiton’s attacks as the home club struggled to put together the attacking moves which had earned them a fifth successive English league title in April.

Surbiton trailed 1-0 at half time, but they had two chances to get back in the match early in the second half, both from penalty corners. Madrid goalkeeper, Maria Ruiz Castillo dived to her right to save Giselle Ansley’s drag-flick within a minute of the restart, then four minutes later, the routine ended tamely with the ball going wide of the left post.

As the second half progressed, Surbiton built up their momentum but Madrid’s defence didn’t flinch, soaking up the pressure and continuing to restrict Surbiton’s forwards.

The sucker punch came two minutes from the end, Rebecca Grote’s slotting a penalty corner shot inside the right post to end Surbiton’s European ambitions for another year.

The players came off the pitch distraught and devastated having aimed to at least reach the semi-finals on home turf.

Club Campo De Madrid will face ‘s-Hertogenbosch in the semi-finals, whilst the best Surbiton can now hope for is fifth place. Victorya Smolevichi of Belarus are their first opponents in the first round of classification matches.
