EuroHockey Club Cup 7th/ 8th Place Playoff
University College Dublin 0 Surbiton 4
Hosts Surbiton finally found their form after a disappointing tournament to beat University College Dublin 4-0 and finish seventh at the EuroHockey Club Cup.
However, UCD threatened in the first half, Ellen Curran running at the Surbiton defence, Dierdre Duke shooting past the right post and Kathryn Mullan forcing a save from the Irish club’s first penalty corner.
Five minutes into the second half, Giselle Ansley’s drag-flick narrowly evaded Jo Hunter and was deflected into the goal off an Irish foot to put Surbiton ahead. Four minutes later, a manoeuvred routine found Emily Atkinson at the left post and then the far post where Georgie Twigg poked the ball home in a scramble to double the lead.
With four minutes remaining, Hannah Martin made the game safe, but UCD elected to use a kicking back with just under three minutes remaining and paid the penalty, Beckie Middleton, on her last appearance in Surbiton colours, rolling the ball into an empty net to complete a comprehensive 4-0 victory with just twelve seconds remaining.
Sarah Page also played her last match for Surbiton, after making the decision to retire from playing hockey.
