We are only a few days into 2019 and already Hockey India are hitting the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
Constant chopping and changing of coaches is a frequent phenomenon in India as Harendra Singh becomes the 25th head coach to be removed from his role in as many years.
Harendra Singh was brought in as men’s coach in May 2018 after Sjoerd Marijne was moved back to the women’s camp following a poor Commonwealth Games campaign where the team finished fourth.
Under Singh, India managed to reach the quarterfinals of the Hockey World Cup, after topping in the group stage. But the side failed to make it into the semifinals after going down 2-1 against the Netherlands. After the defeat, Singh had slammed the referees at the press conference. “My warrior team can only fight 11 vs 11. But not 13 vs 11,” he had said.
