Women’s EuroHockey Club Cup 5th/ 6th Place Playoff
UHC Hamburg 4 Surbiton 1
Surbiton finished sixth in the last ever EuroHockey Club Cup in Amsterdam, going down 4-1 to UHC Hamburg after conceding two goals in the last five minutes.
With the glorious weather over the Easter weekend, showing no sign of abating, Charlotte Stapenhorst, scorer of five goals when Hamburg beat Surbiton 6-0 in the 2016 quarter-finals in Bilthoven, put the German club ahead in the fifth minute with an emphatic finish from the left of the circle.
Surbiton had chances to score, Olivia Chilton, Erica Sanders and Alice Sharp all forcing saves from Hamburg goalkeeper, Noelle Rother in the first half, but Hamburg led 2-0 at half time, Nicola Pluta scoring after Surbiton lost possession around the 23 metre line.
Towards the end of the third quarter, Hamburg threatened to extend their lead with Charlotte van Bodegom and Stapenhorst both forcing saves from Surbiton goalkeeper, Sabbie Heesh.
Instead, Surbiton forced their way back into the match, Michaela Curtis scoring her first goal for the club with nine minutes to play.
A 2-1 scoreline would have been a better reflection on Surbiton’s attitude and performance, but another clinical Stapenhorst finish in the 55th minute and a killer blow from Eileen Mävers in the last minute condemned Surbiton to a 4-1 defeat.
Stapenhorst went close to completing a hat-trick, blazing the ball over the bar, but Surbiton should be proud of their performance considering that they were deprived of most of the Great Britain internationals.
