Investec Women’s Hockey League Premier Division

Surbiton 3 Beeston 0

Surbiton Ladies beat Beeston 3-0 at Sugden Road to join Hampstead & Westminster as the only two teams to have maximum points after two rounds of the Investec Women’s Hockey League regular season.

Hampstead defeated the University of Birmingham 3-0 at Paddington Recreation Ground with both Surbiton and Hampstead scoring all three goals in the first half.

The key to Surbiton’s victory was their penalty corner routine with all three goals rebounding off the backboard. Just as at Loughborough, Surbiton opened the scoring in the tenth minute, Giselle Ansley’s clinical drag-flick perfectly placed to break the deadlock.

Hannah Martin added further conversions in the 14th and 16th minutes with Surbiton seemingly on course to romp to a big margin of victory. However, Beeston goalkeeper Nicki Cochrane helped the Nottingham club stabilise its defence.

Eloise Stenner, one of Beeston’s scorers in their surprise 2-1 win at Sugden Road last season, came close to opening the scoring for Surbiton in the fifth minute before Cochrane came to the visitors’ rescue.

Erica Sanders and Stenner were subsequently denied by Cochrane whilst youngster Emily Guckian also had attacking opportunities.

Beeston failed to score from their two penalty corners but came close to pulling a goal back. Surbiton’s Holly Munro battled with Beeston’s Jess Hood and Hannah Martin battled with Agustina Fernandez but having quickly established a three goal advantage, Surbiton were unable to make further inroads through the Beeston defence.

Surbiton and particularly goalkeeper Sabbie Heesh will be delighted with their first clean sheet of the season.

Elsewhere, Buckingham dropped their first points of the season in a 1-1 draw at Bowdon Hightown. Loughborough Students and Clifton Robinsons both gained their first wins of the season, Loughborough stunning East Grinstead 5-1 in West Sussex and Clifton coming back from 1-0 down to beat Holcombe 2-1 in Bristol.
