Men’s Hockey League Premier Division
Surbiton 4 Beeston 2
Surbiton beat Beeston 4-2 to stay ahead of Old Georgians and Holcombe on goal difference at the top of the Men’s Hockey League Premier Division table after the first two rounds of the season.
On a pleasantly warm afternoon at Sugden Road, Surbiton took the lead through Tom Sorsby in the 15th minute, Beeston goalkeeper Simon Hujwan given no chance with the ball fired into the roof of the net.
There was no scoring in the second quarter, Beeston’s Robbie Gleeson and Kyle Marshall working hard in the visitors’ defence, but three minutes into the second half, Alan Forsyth doubled Surbiton’s advantage with an excellent finish, only for Beeston to respond a minute later, Richard Lawrence catching the home defence out.
Ben Boon restored Surbiton’s two goal advantage in the 45th minute, putting away a rebound from the hosts’ second penalty corner after Luke Taylor’s drag-flick was saved by Hujwan, however with six minutes remaining, Henry Croft gave Beeston hope of snatching at least a point to leave Surbiton in a similar position to last season’s corresponding fixture when they led 3-2 late in the game.
On that occasion, Beeston scored twice in a minute to steal a 4-3 victory, but history failed to repeat itself, Zach Wallace clinching Surbiton’s win with a goal from close range in the penultimate minute.
Beeston join Brooklands Manchester University and the University of Exeter in having lost both of their opening matches. Brooklands led 3-1 at East Grinstead before the West Sussex team fought back to win 5-3. The University of Exeter lost 2-0 at home to Holcombe on Saturday night.
Meanwhile, Old Georgians won 4-3 at reigning champions Hampstead & Westminster to stake their claim in the top flight and Reading bounced back from their 10-1 home thrashing at the hands of Surbiton last week to earn their first point of the season with a 2-2 draw at Wimbledon.
