Whetton swaps Green & Gold for Orange & Red

Jake Whetton will play for the Oranje-Rood next season. The 28-year-old Australian international has signed a two-year contract with the team coached by Robert van der Horst, his former teammate at Jaypee Punjab Warriors in the Hockey India League (HIL).

“I believe that the big league is one of the best competitions in the world and I’ve always wanted to play in that competition,” says Whetton in a comment on the Eindhoven club website. “I have heard great things from former Australian players who have played at the club before and think it is a unique opportunity for me and my family to come to such a great club. It will help me to become a better hockey player and I can mean a lot to HC Oranje-Rood. “

Whetton is one of the well established players in Australia. The attacker, who plays in the Australian competition for Queensland Blades, has already played 200 times for his home country. With the Kookaburras, he won the world title, four times gold at the Commonwealth Games and four times the Champions Trophy. Last year Whetton won the first edition of the Pro League with Australia. In 2018, he was nominated for FIH Player of the Year.

It was recently announced that Mink van der Weerden will leave Oranje-Rood for the German club Rot-Weiss Köln and that Sander Baart will return to the club .
