Day 5: Spain snatch semi-final spot to join Belgium, Netherlands and Germany in final four

Spain got the draw they needed to reach the semi-finals of the European Championships for the first time since 2009, dropping England into the relegation pool. In Pool B, early double puts Germany in pole position for a semi-final place. The Netherlands confirm top spot with a 6-0 win over Scotland.

POOL A: SPAIN – ENGLAND 2-2

England started well, leading through Sam Ward’s first-half goal but Pau Quemada and Diego Arana turned things around in the third quarter, and while Ashley Jackson equalised, Spain clung on for the result they needed.

Miki Delas – along with Lleonart, Cortes and Sergi Enrique – was part of the team ten years ago who reached the semis before.

He said afterwards: ‘it was a really strong fight. We knew they were going full gas, and our goal was to manage that situation. We could have changed the structure of the game with the stroke for 3-1, but it wasn’t to be.’

Goals: 21′ Sam Ward (FG) 0-1, 33′ Pau Quemada (FG) 1-1, 43′ Diego Arana (FG) 2-1, 52′ Ashley Jackson (PC) 2-2

POOL A: BELGIUM – WALES 6-0

Belgium powered to a fine win over Wales at the Belfius EuroHockey Championships, topping Pool A and going into the semi-final to play Germany.

They scored twice in each of the first three quarters to underpin the result with Cedric Charlier netting two times. The win also extinguished Wales’ long-shot at a semi-final place – they go into Pool C with one point, hoping they can avoid relegation.

Goals: 15’ Alex Hendrickx (PC) 1-0, 15’ Tom Boon (FG) 2-0, 25’ Nicolas de Kerpel (FG) 3-0, 28’ Cedric Charlier (FG) 4-0, 35’ Cedric Charlier (FG) 5-0, 41’ Thomas Briels (FG) 6-0

POOL B: IRELAND – GERMANY 0-5

Germany copper-fastened a guaranteed semi-final place as they saw off Ireland as two early goals meant they were always in control of this Pool B tie.

Niklas Wellen and Tom Grambusch put them 2-0 up inside eight minutes to put them in pole position. They then had to wait until the final six minutes to add three more via Malte Hellwig, Florian Fuchs and Lukas Windfeder, punishing Ireland as they took off their goalkeeper for an extra outfielder.

Goals: 3′ Niklas Wellen (FG) 0-1, 8′ Tom Grambusch (PC) 0-2, 54′ Malte Hellwig (FG) 0-3, 59′ Florian Fuchs (FG) 0-4, 60′ Lukas Windfeder (PC) 0-5

POOL B: NETHERLANDS – SCOTLAND 6-0

The Netherlands topped Pool B with a 4-0 win over Scotland to advance to the semi-finals with a perfect record while the Scots will contest Pool C, hoping they can avoid relegation.

Early goals from Thierry Brinkman and Mink van der Weerden set them on their way, and while Scotland defended hard, they could not prevent another four goals from breaking through their rearguard action.

Goals: 6′ Billy Baker 1-0 (FG), 14′ Thierry Brinkman 2-0 (PC), 23′ Mink van der Weerden 3-0 (PC), 37′ Thierry Brinkman 4-0 (FG), 58′ Jip Janssen 5-0 (PC), 60′ Mirco Pruijser 6-0 (PC)
