Hockey New Zealand can confirm several updates to the Vantage Black Sticks Men’s squad ahead of their opening match at the 2025 FIH Nations Cup in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Striker and named captain Sam Lane has unfortunately been ruled out of the tournament after sustaining a hamstring injury during a training session earlier this week. A huge loss both on and off the turf, Lane was set to lead the side and provide an attacking spark as the team looks to defend its 2024 gold medal.
As a result, Dylan Thomas has been activated from the traveling reserves and will step into the squad. Thomas, who plays in the same position, brings international experience and attacking flair.
Dylan – “Was really excited to be named in the Nations Cup Squad, especially after missing out on international hockey throughout 2024,” said Thomas. “It’s been over 18 months since I put on the Black Jersey and I can’t wait to get out there tomorrow vs Japan and show what I’m capable of.”
With Lane’s absence, the team has also confirmed goalkeeper Dom Dixon as the new captain for the tournament marking his first time leading the national side.
Dom – “It’s a huge honour to lead the Black Sticks as we defend our Nations Cup title,” said Dixon. “Losing Sammy in the build-up has been tough, but the team has really pulled together. I’m proud to step in and lead this tight group, we’re ready to give it everything.”
To ensure full squad cover, Bradley Rothwell has flown in from New Zealand and joins the group as a traveling reserve. Rothwell is the latest in a line of young players pushing for future selection and has quickly slotted into the environment.
Bradley – “It was a typical Wednesday at work then came a phone call, 32 hrs later I was on a plane to Malaysia joining the team I’ve always dreamed about playing for,” said Rothwell. “Being called up to this group and team means everything. Always dreamed of being here and with a combination of youth and experience in this group I’m keen to learn as much as I can.”
