Scotland: Scottish Hockey announces aspiring and emerging training squads and player pathway

Scottish Hockey has named the national training squads for this year’s girls’ and boys’ aspiring and emerging squads, and as we announce our national squads for season 2023-2024, this signifies the launch of our new player pathway. In March this year Scottish Hockey announced key structural changes within the player pathway, including no longer delivering U21 squads as standalone programmes. Our new national player pathway will consist of:

  • Emerging Boys and Girls squads
  • Aspiring Boys and Girls squads
  • Senior Men’s and Women’s squads

What does this mean?

The number of players within each senior squad has increased to maximise the competitive pool of players available. There is close alignment between Emerging and Aspiring squads to allow appropriate player development and transition. Aspiring squads will train closely with senior squads on a regular basis. This development will bring cohesion to the squads and will allow players to be seen and transition when appropriate.

A further change implemented is that national programmes will run for longer periods of the year. This comes from player and coach feedback for the desire for additional time on the pitch together to work towards our performance on an international stage.

Scottish Hockey will be sending teams to the U21 Euros in 2024. These teams will be selected from eligible players from both Senior and Aspiring squads. We are also aiming to have teams qualify and represent Scotland in Junior World Cups.

Finally, the selections for all squads have now taken place for this season. There will be a further open selection for any players who wish to be considered in the senior squads. For the women this will be in February 2024 and for the men this will be May 2024 Selection for Emerging and Aspiring squads will take place at BRAVE Cup in August 2024 and via Transition Camps in September 2024.
