Canada: U17 Men’s Team Travels to Malaysia for Mirnawan Cup

Canada takes on international field in Kuala Lumpur

Field Hockey Canada is thrilled to announce the U17 Men’s roster that will be traveling to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to compete in the third annual iteration of the Mirnawan Cup. The tournament will take place at the iconic Bukit Jalil National Hockey Stadium. The tournament will feature eight teams in the U17 Boys and Girls division and is a great opportunity to give U17 athletes international exposure.

ATTENDING TEAMS: Malaysia Speedy Tigers A, Malaysia Speedy Tigers B, Queensland (Australia), Korea, South Africa, Austria and Canada.

The Mirnawan Cup is an international youth hockey tournament, named after Malaysian hockey legend YBhg. Dato Mirnawan Nawawi. This is the third edition of the tournament and is hosted by the Malaysian Hockey Confederation and Hockey Development Program of Malaysia.

This will be the first time a U17 team from Canada has attended the tournament. The team will be led by the coaching of Men’s National Team Head Coach, Patrick Tshutshani assisted by Mike Van Iderstine. Van Iderstine is the NextGen Pathway Lead and feels that this event is perfectly placed to allow our Men’s U17 athletes in Canada access to international competition.

“The tournament gives these athletes a rare development opportunity and exposure to an international tournament early . This is the first international tournament for this men’s age group for as long as I can remember and I am very proud we can provide these U17 athletes at least five or six international matches against a variety of different hockey styles and top hockey nations,” Van Iderstine said.

Under the guidance of High Performance Director, Kate Perry and NextGen Director Andrea Gibson, this tour falls perfectly in-line with the strategic priority of growing the high performance pipeline and building the boys hockey player pool to ultimately feed the Junior and Senior National Teams. Van Iderstine knows that this is the first step of a bigger process; to build depth & experience within our youth age categories, which will set us up as a nation to provide our senior national teams’ for future success on the international stage.

“These athletes are going to be a part of the next U21 cycles and in line to be senior national team athletes over the next decade. We want to build a sustainable pathway and system so we can select from a diverse nation-wide player pool,” he said.

Schedule and streaming information will be released prior to the tournament. Go Canada Go!
