South African Hockey extends heartfelt condolences to the family of anti-apartheid activist and former President of the South African Council on Sport (SACOS), Frank van der Horst, who passed away this week at the age of 86.
Between 1982 and 1988, Van der Horst led SACOS during one of the darkest political eras in the nation’s history. He played a pivotal role in organizing the Olympics of the Oppressed, also known as the SACOS Games or SACOS Festival, in 1982 and 1988. His contributions were further commemorated in 2022 when SACOS in the Western Cape launched the Frank van der Horst Exhibition at the National Library of South Africa in the Company’s Garden.
Former players and administrators fondly remember the insightful, educational, and thought-provoking Opening Ceremonies of national hockey meetings and tournaments, thanks to Frank’s guidance.
Frank was a dedicated servant of non-racial sport and played a crucial role in the fight to unite sport. SA Hockey pays tribute to a remarkable individual who left an lasting mark on the sport and society. As the legendary secretary of SAHB and president of SACOS, Frank was a champion of principle, a beacon of wisdom, and a tireless advocate for non-racial sport.
His leadership set the tone for national hockey meetings and tournaments, inspiring many to strive for excellence, unity, and social justice. Frank’s unwavering commitment to the fight against apartheid in sport was instrumental in isolating the oppressive regime.
Frank’s legacy extends far beyond his impressive administrative and leadership achievements. He was a unifying force and a mentor to many. May his contributions to sport and society never be forgotten.
