August is Hall of Fame month, as inductees are celebrated
Field Hockey Canada is thrilled to announce the 2022 induction class of the Field Hockey Canada Hall of Fame. There are seven inductees this year; five enter in the builder category, one goes into the athlete category and an umpire to join the officials category. Complete stories and videos will air over the course of the coming weeks in August.

ATHLETE CATEGORY:
The late Sally Manning played on the Women’s National Team from 1970-1980. She was a team leader and a top player. She played in four World Championships culminating in the 1979 IFWHA World Championships on home soil in Vancouver, where she was selected to the International President’s XI all-star team. The Toronto native has been inducted into the University of Toronto Sports Hall of Fame, the Vaughan Sports Hall of Fame and the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame.
BUILDER CATEGORY:
Pat Hall is the definition of a builder of the game. Her dedication to the game began in 1961 when she became a player in the Vancouver Island Ladies Field Hockey Association. She went on to coach, umpire and administer at all levels of the game throughout Canada. In 1983, she was awarded the Victoria Sports Person award and the BCWFHF Gold Pin for her contributions to BC Field Hockey. Pat was a long-time president and vice president of the BCWFHF and was inducted into the Victoria Sports Hall of Fame in 2020. She was a member of the Board of the Canadian Women’s Field Hockey Association from 1976-79 and served as its Vice President in 1978-79.
Inducted in the Builder Category, the late Margaret McLean was the first-ever president of the Canadian Women’s Field Hockey Association. She was instrumental to the growth of the sport particularly on the women’s side from 1960-1975. A great player in her own right, Marg played on the Hall of Fame-inducted 1956 Women’s National Team. Her coaching, administrative and executive abilities are what made her irreplaceable in the field hockey community.
Florence ‘Flossie’ Strachan-Petersen was a member of the 1956 Women’s National Team that led the first international delegation to Australia. Florence was a leader in the community, on the field as a player, coach, and umpire and off the field as a builder, team manager and administrator of the game. She was the first president of the 79ers, a sport, philanthropic, and social club for those involved with the 1979 world tournament. She served as president from 1976-1999, including a formidable amount of work to host the successful 1979 World Championships in Vancouver.
Originally from Australia, and a member of the 1960 and 1964 Australian Olympic team, John McBryde immigrated to Canada in 1966 and has since been an instrumental member of the Canadian hockey community. John has been a leader of the game in many areas including being a program director for the CFHA, a driving force in the creation of turf fields, tournament director, team manager and hockey administrator. He still plays and contributes to Canadian masters hockey.
Coreen Flemming is a visionary community and nation-wide leader. She has a 30+ year career in coaching, administration and community leadership, making an impact especially in the Atlantic provinces and Ontario. She was awarded the CWFHA Volunteer Award for Provincial and National Outstanding Contributions and Ministry of Tourism & Recreation “Volunteer of the Year” in 1990. She is a 6-time recipient of the Ontario Special Achievement Awards in recognition of Distinguished Performance and Contribution to Amateur Sport.
OFFICIAL CATEGORY:
Ken O’Connor is being inducted in the Official Category to celebrate his incredible career in Canadian and international officiating. Between his work in Canada and the US, he boasts a 40-year umpiring career. He officiated over 75 international matches between 1978 and 1990. He was the first Canadian male umpire to officiate at an Olympic Games (1984) and a FIH World Cup (1990 Pakistan). Ken O’Connor is a world class umpire and a role model and mentor in the Canadian hockey community.
