Canada: Roster Announcement: Men’s Olympic Qualifier

Canada building off Pan Ams with 18-man Olympic qualifier roster

Field Hockey Canada is thrilled to announce the Men’s National Team roster for the upcoming FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifier in Muscat, Oman. Set to take place from January 15 to 21, 2024, this tournament is the last chance for teams to secure a spot at the Paris Olympic Games.

Canada, ranked 17th in the world, finds itself in a challenging pool alongside Germany (5), New Zealand (11), and Chile (22). With the stakes at an all-time high, the Canadian squad is gearing up for a battle that will test their technical, tactical and physical skills against some of the world’s best teams. The tournament features a total of eight teams, including Great Britain, Malaysia, China, and Pakistan in the other pool. The top three finishers will secure their places in the Olympic Games.

Having recently defeated USA and earned a bronze medal at the Pan American Games in November, the Canadians will look to build on this confidence. The team’s performance showcased their resilience, bouncing back after a tough semifinal loss, and they are eager to carry this momentum into the Olympic qualifier in Oman.

With a roster largely unchanged from their Pan American Games success, Canada aims to build on the valuable experience gained during the continental championships in Santiago. The chemistry among the players and their determination to secure an Olympic berth will play a crucial role in their performance in Muscat. For head coach, Patrick Tshutshani, he said the team has a blend of veteran experience and youthful energy, and will build off the experience from Pan American Games. According to Tshutshani, the players bring a resilience and relentlessness to every match, that will prove vital at a tournament of this calibre.

“As a coach, I can be proud of our entire squad with the hard work and effort they continue to produce. I believe the team selected will give their best and look to put us in the best possible position for success. Our team is a balance of experience and youth relative to international caps,” Tshutshani said. “For me, it is important that we continue to apply ourselves according to our team culture and our principles of play. We want to continue to see improvement’s in our play and grow from strength to strength as the tournament progresses. I have great pride working with these fine men who continue to push the envelope. They continue to hold each other accountable, they have tremendous fighting spirit and a never say die attitude.”

Schedule and Tournament Information

Six teams have already secured their spots in the Paris Olympics through continental championships, leaving six places up for grabs at the two Olympic qualifier tournaments happening in January. The field hockey community eagerly anticipates witnessing their favourite players in action, as Canada embarks on a challenging yet promising journey towards Olympic qualification. Stay tuned for an exhilarating display of skill, determination, and national pride in Muscat!
