Wales came bursting into the game full of intent to find their first win of their Tri-Nations series in their final match following two loses and a draw.

They took an early lead through a well performed penalty corner in the third minute of the match. A well faked pass to Megan Lewis-Williams saw Eloise Laity deflect the ball into the goal and claim her second goal of this Tri-Nations Series.

Wales held their lead until the final with Lauren Roberts making some critical saves to maintain the 1-0 score line.

Captain Beth Bingham took a ball to the hand in the 21st minute and was removed from the field of play.

Unfortunately Uruguay equalised through a confident reverse hit at close range in the 53rd minute by Magdalena Gomez leaving Wales to see out this Tri-Nations series without a victory.

The match saw Anja Atkin and Lucie Dalman receive their first senior international caps.

Head Coach Kevin Johnson said: “I reflect on this final game with a huge admiration for the players. On a back-to-back game day after we worked so hard last night, we managed to find a performance this evening against the hosts that showed quality, character and in some of the most challenging circumstances I can remember as a Head Coach.

Whilst we were unlucky to concede a late equaliser to deny us what would have been a well-deserved victory, we can look back on this series of matches as an experience that has connected us closer together as a group and will no doubt be beneficial to us as we edge closer to European competition in July.”

Beth Bingham commented: “It was a really strong performance from the team tonight and I think we were unlucky not to come away with the three points”.

We’ve played six games in a short amount of time and the improvements we’ve made have been massive and we can look forward to the Europeans now.”
