Wales: Wales lose out to Ireland in second test

bf0b9f 14937a1eb40e405997a5b62123eddf8f~mv2 - Wales: Wales lose out to Ireland in second test - Wales faced Ireland in the second match of their test series.

Wales faced Ireland in the second match of their test series.

Ahead of the game Rhys Bradshaw and Rupert Shipperely celebrated their cap milestones of 50 and 100 Welsh Senior International caps.

Mike Wood also received his first Senior International Welsh cap.

The game was a feisty matchup full of cards and decided by an onslaught of penalty corners, with 18 witnessed throughout the game.

Ireland took an early lead in the scoring with John Mckee finding the net in the 8th minute

Wales finished the first quarter on the attacking foot with a series of penalty corners they were unfortunately unable to convert.

Ireland doubled their lead in the 22nd minute through a penalty stroke which was swiftly converted by Lee Cole to double Ireland’s lead.

Fred Newbold closed the gap through a penalty corner in the 39th minute. However Ireland immediately responded through a Connor Harte penalty corner.

The final quarter saw Ireland extend their lead as they converted two more penalty corners in the 49th and 54th minute through Luke Madeley and Lee Cole respectively.

Owain Dolan-Gray helped Wales close the deficit by one as he scored a brilliant field goal in the final minute of the game.

Co-Captain Rupert Shipperley commented:

“A bit of a frustrating game today, we got ourselves back in it after going 2-0 down and won lots of corners but we just couldn’t convert. A few game management areas to work on before we go into tomorrow as well but we’ll make sure we bounce back”

Head Coach Danny Newcombe said:

“It was a frustrating result for the group today, it was a really inconsistent performance where in patches we showed the kind of hockey we can play and other patches where we were not where we needed to be and our discipline and game management really let us down.

We’ve reset the group and we’re in a good headspace now and we look forward to another great battle.”
