Successes of the German national hockey teams
The German hockey teams are among the most successful teams in Germany. In January 2023, the men’s team sensationally won the gold medal at the World Championships in India. At the last European Championship, the team narrowly lost the final in a penalty shootout against the then hosts, the Netherlands. With eight European Championship titles, Germany is the record winner for men.
The German women were in the finals of the last two European Hockey Championships in 2019 and 2021, but lost both games against the Netherlands. The team finished fourth at the last World Cup. The women’s selection of the DHB achieved the two European Championship titles in 2007 and 2013.

What the German national coaches say about the European Hockey Championships
Women’s national coach Valentin Altenburg: “No matter where we have played as DANAS in the last few weeks, whether in Wiesbaden, Limburg or Rüsselsheim, it was always sold out. The spark jumped from the field to the spectators and from the spectators to the players. That makes an incredible amount of anticipation for a sold-out house at the European Championship in our living room. We will look for our chance in every game of the EuroHockey Championships 2023, no matter who is on the other side.”
Men’s national coach André Henning:“We want to take our fans with us in our own stadium and carry them away. This team has a strong mix of offensive power and immense defensive qualities. At the European Championship we want to use that to use our speed on the counterattack. It’s going to be a very special event because it’s the first home tournament of everyone’s career. Six months after winning the world championship, reaching for the next title is a huge challenge on many levels and also a special opportunity that motivates us all.”
