England: Time for Change? David Ralph’s Future at the Helm of England Women’s Hockey

As England’s women’s team languishes near the bottom of the 2024–25 FIH Pro League table, pressure is mounting on Head Coach David Ralph. With the side now battling relegation and suffering heavy defeats—including a bruising 6–2 loss to the Netherlands—many in the hockey community are questioning whether it’s time for fresh leadership.

Since taking over in 2021, Ralph has overseen a team in transition. While his long-term vision is clear—introducing emerging talent such as Lottie Bingham, Sofia Martin, and Beth Alexander—the results have been inconsistent. England’s failure to medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics was a major setback, marking their first Olympic blank since 2008. That disappointment has now been followed by three successive Pro League seasons of decline: sixth, then seventh, and now bottom.

Critics argue that the England Hockey setup has become too insular, often favouring internal promotions over bold external appointments. Ralph’s tenure, to some, represents this cautious approach—a reluctance to make tough decisions and instil a cutting edge in a team once known for its ferocity and flair.

Yet there is a counterpoint. Ralph has handed out over 30 caps in two seasons, building depth and offering invaluable experience to the next generation. His defenders argue that short-term pain is necessary for long-term gain, and that the true impact of his tenure may not be seen until the next Olympic cycle.

But with results worsening and confidence waning, the question looms larger than ever:

🗣️ Should England Hockey replace David Ralph, or back his long-term plan?
