Rot-Weiss Köln are looking to build on their surprisingly comfortable 6-1 win over Club an der Alster last Sunday as the German Bundesliga races along at speed.
That victory saw the EHL-bound side bounce back from an opening day shoot-out defeat to Harvestehuder THC after normal time had ended 1-1 last Saturday.
They only had four of their eight world champions on display with Tom Grambusch, Christopher Rühr, Michel Struthoff, and Justus Warweg all out, but newcomers Jakob Brilla and Hugo von Montgelas made their debuts in the Rot-Weiss jersey.
A day later, it was tight against Alster at 1-1 at half-time with Paul Glander cancelled out a Jeremy Hayward opener.
However, in the Cologne rain, the Hamburg visitors’ hopes slipped away in the second half. Florian Adrians (32nd and 40th minute), Brilla with his debut goal at his new club,l Glander and Raphael Hartkopf secured Köln’s first win of the season.
It gave them four points from the opening series of games with only national champions Hamburger Polo Club getting more. They ended the weekend with five points thanks to a 5-2 success at Crefelder HTC and a shoot-out win against Uhlenhorst Mülheim.
This weekend, Rot-Weiss have another home double-header with Munich SC visiting on Saturday and then Berliner HC arrive on Sunday.
After that, they will play UHC Hamburg away before heading to Eindhoven for the Euro Hockey League.
