Oranje-Rood’s season got off to something of a false-start in Bilthoven as newly promoted SCHC fought back from 2-0 down to draw on the men’s Hoofdklasse’s opening day.
The Eindhoven club held a 2-0 lead at half-time thanks to a goal by Jaïr van der Horst and a converted penalty stroke by Henrik Mertgens (pictured).
After the break, SCHC came back in the third quarter to draw level thanks to two goals in quick succession – both from penalty corners – via Casper Hafkamp and Olaf van Staa.
The result did see the Eindhoven club remain unbeaten in an away match for the thirteenth time, Oranje-Rood’s longest unbeaten away streak in Hoofdklasse history, but it will be little consolation.
AH&BC Amsterdam were too strong for Tilburg with five second half goals seeing them win 5-0 with Duco Telgenkamp scoring twice, adding to goals from Dayaan Cassiem, Floris Middendorp and Boris Burkhardt.
Jeroen Hertzberger’s debut as coach of Rotterdam started with a 3-1 defeat to Bloemendaal despite Thijs van Pelt scoring on debut after his move from Club de Campo.
But Zach Wallace’s penalty stroke, a Floris Wortelboer backhand and a debut effort from Pere Amat turned things around.
