We are delighted to announce that the Ireland Men’s Hockey Team have been shortlisted for Team of the Year at the 2026 Olympic Sport Awards, following a landmark year for the team on the international stage.
The team secured qualification for the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup after a sensational campaign at the Qualifiers in Santiago, Chile. Ireland topped their group before overcoming Wales in the semi-final to confirm their World Cup place, then produced a memorable comeback victory over France to win the qualifying tournament outright. The achievement marked Ireland’s first World Cup appearance since 2018 and saw the team become just the fourth Irish men’s side to compete at a World Cup since the country’s debut in 1978.
That momentum continued at the World Cup, where the team secured a best-ever 10th-place finish. Ireland also recorded their first-ever World Cup victory, coming from behind to defeat South Africa, before adding a second win against Malaysia in the classification stages.
It has been a landmark year for the Ireland Men’s team, and now the hockey community can help recognise their achievements.
