Saturday, November 7: Round 7 of the EY Hockey league, the first of two rounds in a crucial double-weekend, proved an exciting and potentially pivotal one in the title race as Three Rock Rovers ended Lisnagarvey’s unbeaten run, while Railway Union extended their lead at the top of the table.

In the Women’s EYHL, Railway Union kicked off the weekend with a win under the floodlights on Friday night as they beat Pembroke Wanderers 3-1 to extend their lead at the top of the table to eight points. Portadown secured a potentially vital 2-1 win over fellow Ulster side Ards to secure a third win of the season and climb to sixth. Queen’s also came out on top against a provincial side, beating Pegasus 2-1 to enter the top four. Monkstown came from a goal behind to secure a bonus point draw against Loreto in Beaufort, seeing the newly promoted side climb out of the relegation zone to eighth. And UCD came away with two points against Old Alex at Belfield, securing the drawing bonus point to remain outside of the botom two.

In the Men’s EYHL, Three Rock Rovers blew the title race wide open with a 2-1 win over Lisnagarvey at Grange Road to go level on points with the reigning champions. Pembroke Wanderers seized the opportunity to summit the table with yet another high scoring win, this time beating Monkstown thanks to a last gasp goal from Jake Fulton which completed his hattrick. Avoca secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over Portrane to strengthen their position among the top four. Banbridge returned to wining form with a comprehensive home win over Cork Harlequins. And Corinthia and YMCA had to settle for a draw in their encounter in St. Columba’s, with the visitors leaving with the bonus point from the shootout.

All sides return to competitive duties tomorrow as they close out their double weekends with Round 9 of the EY Hockey League.
