In the second match of the Andalucia Series, Great Britain defeated Max Caldas’ Spanish men (0-4) in San Fernando, where the locals sought to dominate the game.
However, David Goodfield scored first in the 14th minute to give Great Britain the lead, which they would carry into the half-time break.
Early in the second period, Spain was awarded a penalty corner, which they failed to convert. Great Britain scored two goals in two minutes, James Gall (0-2, minute 22) and Chris Griffiths (0-3, minute 23), leaving the host trailing by three goals at halftime.
Some wise words from Max Caldas at halftime seemed to instill confidence in his team, as the RedSticks began with more zeal. Despite having more possession and chances, Spain was unable to capitalize on their third-quarter dominance.
As the clock ticked down to the end of the game, Stand in Great Britain coach Zak Jones rallied his team to reclaim the form that had been shown in the first half of the game. Another penalty corner was awarded to Great Britain after a deft passing movement inside the Spanish area. Peter Scott scored on the rebound from a Nick Bandurak flick at the end of the 57th minute.
The two teams will play again on Friday (1:00 p.m.), with live streaming available on the Andalucia Hockey YouTube Channel.
