The African Games are the continents multi-sport event held every four years. Hockey in 2024 returns to the games for the first time since 2003 in Nigeria. The African Hockey Federation has announced the fixtures for the tournament taking place from 15-22 March 2024.
The Men’s tournament will be battled out between Egypt, South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, and hosts Ghana. The teams will play in a one pool format with the top 2 teams qualifying for the final on 22 March. Team South Africa Hockey Men will be the last team to join the festivities as they wait until day 2 of the competition to play their opening game when they play Kenya, a team they last played in a tight battle winning 2-1 at the African Cup of Nations at the same venue.
48 hours later the reigning African Champions will play the hosts before they take on Egypt in a repeat of every African Games hockey final. South Africa will complete their group stage facing off with Nigeria and will hope to be in the tournament’s gold medal match on the 22nd of March.
The women’s tournament has only four teams with the same teams as the men except no Egypt team. The four teams were the four semi-finalists at the African Hockey Road to Paris Qualifier earlier this year so Team South Africa Hockey women will be up for a stern test from the best of Africa.
In a repeat of the Olympic Qualifying final South Africa face Nigeria to open the tournament on the 15th and will be back 24 hours later to face Kenya. After the rest day South Africa will complete their group stage assignment with a match against Ghana. They will then have four days to wait until the final so will be tested once the tournament concludes on the 22 March.
All Broadcast details will be shared on the SA Hockey channels in due course.
