A 3-0 win for Scotland women in Cardiff saw the young Scots squad win the series 2-1 against Wales.
Scotland started the contest at a great tempo and played exciting hockey from the first minute of the match.
Despite enjoying lots of possession, and fashioning opportunities in the Welsh circle, the Scots weren’t able to create a clean effort at goal.
That all changed after half time when Jika Nyirenda opened the scoring for Scotland. A precise flick to the goalkeeper’s left nestled in the back of the net and gave the Tartan Hearts a 1-0 lead.
Jess Buchanan had a great game in goals for Scotland and made two great penalty corner saves, as well as one from open play low to her right side.
Scotland’s midfield was dominant with Millie Steiger; Eve Pearson; and Bronwyn Shields dictating the play.
The second goal came soon enough and it was an imaginative and precise pass from Mhairi Low that allowed Ellie Mackenzie to deflect home to double Scotland’s lead.
In the final quarter Fran Lonergan completed the scoring when she slammed a penalty corner into the bottom right corner for 3-0.
Head Coach Chris Duncan said, “It was such a good performance. We want to play pressure games so we built that into the mentality for today, making sure that this was a must win game. We started really well then we just grew from there.
“Considering the average age of the squad on this trip was 20 I’m enormously proud at how well our young players stepped up. We’re obviously delighted with the series win, but it’s the level of performance from such a young team that is really promising for our squad.”
