Ireland crowned EuroHockey U21 Championship II-A champions with perfect campaign in Poznań

Sunday, August 2: The Ireland U21 Men delivered a flawless performance at the EuroHockey U21 Championship II-A in Poznań, Poland, winning all five of their matches in emphatic fashion to claim the gold medal, secure promotion back to Europe’s top tier for the 2028 competition, and book their place at the 2027 FIH Junior World Cup.

Ireland made an immediate statement in their opening fixture, overcoming Croatia 11-1. Despite conceding a number of early penalty corners, Ireland quickly took control as Toby Slye O’Connell struck twice from penalty corners to turn the game around before Sam Dale and Ryan Williams added further goals to establish a commanding first-quarter lead. Ireland’s relentless attacking continued throughout the contest, with both Dale and Slye O’Connell completing hat-tricks while Noa Mulvey and Milo Thompson also found the scoresheet. Croatia pulled one back in the closing stages, but Williams completed his own hat-trick to cap an emphatic opening-day victory.

There was no let-up 24 hours later as Ireland swept aside Lithuania 14-0 in another dominant display. Nine different players got on the scoresheet in a comprehensive team performance, with Slye O’Connell adding four more goals to move clear at the top of the tournament scoring charts. John Cunningham also claimed a hat-trick, while Tom Archbold, Thomas Dobson, Jake Fulton, Matthew McKee, Milo Thompson and Ben Walker all contributed as Ireland made it two wins from two.

Ireland faced their sternest test of the tournament against a determined Italy in their third outing. Slye O’Connell gave Ireland an early advantage before Italy responded almost immediately to level the scores. Although Ireland created numerous opportunities throughout the remainder of the first half, Italy held firm to ensure the sides went into the break locked at 1-1. Ireland eventually found the breakthrough early in the third quarter when Alfie Lequesne calmly converted a penalty stroke, before Ben Walker extended the advantage with a well-taken penalty corner. Thomas Dobson added a fourth goal in the final quarter to secure a deserved 4-1 victory and move Ireland to within touching distance of the title.

The penultimate match against hosts Poland proved another significant hurdle. In a tense, hard-fought encounter, Ireland controlled much of the possession and territory but were repeatedly denied by a resilient Polish defence. After three scoreless quarters, the breakthrough finally arrived with just ten minutes remaining as Milo Thompson found the decisive touch to secure a priceless 1-0 victory. The result meant Ireland required only a single point from their final match to guarantee the championship.

Rather than settling for what they needed, Ireland finished the tournament with the same intensity and professionalism that had defined their week. Facing Ukraine in the final fixture, Sam Dale struck twice alongside a Jake Fulton goal to give Ireland a comfortable first-half lead before Dale completed his hat-trick in the third quarter. Slye O’Connell added two more goals in the final period to take his tournament tally to 10 and claim the Top Scorer award, while Matthew McKee also found the net in a convincing 7-0 victory that sealed a perfect five wins from five.
