Netherlands: Orange men also win Pro League title without playing

Like the Orange women, the Dutchmen have won the sixth Pro League season without playing themselves. The only remaining rival Australia lost three points Sunday afternoon in the game with England (2-1), making the frontrunner Orange unbeatable.

The Dutch closed their Pro League season early this week with two games against England (3-2 win and 1-1, with a bonus point via shoot-outs). By those five points in London, national coach Jeroen Delmée’s team finished with a total of 35 points from sixteen games. That number proved unmatchable for all other teams.

Before this weekend, Germany and Australia were the only other two contenders for the final victory. The Germans squandered their chance immediately on Saturday by losing the home game with Argentina 2-3, despite a 2-0 lead. Australia did win against England on Saturday (3-4), but went down in another meeting with the English on Sunday.

Third title in four years

It is the third Pro League title in the six-year history of the national competition, and also the third under Delmée’s leadership. The Dutch first won the Pro League in 2021-2022 and was also the best team a season later. Last season, the title went to Australia, which also won the tournament in 2019. Belgium is the only other country to ever capture the Pro League title (2020-2021).
