Hamburger Polo Club are finally the German men’s national champions as they won the final at the third attempt, defeating record champions HTC Uhlenhorst Mülheim in the final 4-0 in Bonn.
It means they will contest the EHL FINAL8 next Easter with Uhlenhorst – by virtue of their super semi-final 4-1 win over Rot-Weiss Köln – will go to October’s ROUND1.
The Mülheim fans created a huge atmosphere in the packed stands (3,000 spectators) with fireworks and chants but had their spirits dampened after just four minutes when Polo’s very first attack found the back of the net.
Justus Weigand was the scorer, tapping in after Tim Brand and Paul-Philipp Kaufmann has combined down the left.
And that was how it remained until late in the third quarter as both sides had their chances with Kane Russell brilliantly clearing a Lukas Windfeder shot off the line.
Indeed, Mülheim had the edge in general play but Polo were robust in defence and attempted to use their pace on the counter.
The second goal came when a clearance from Mülheim only fell as far as Lukas Kossel and his cross into the D was deflected by Paul Smith past David Harte.
And Polo were out of sight early in Q4, Jan-Hendrik Bartels the next to profit and Russell finished off the victory in the final minute, securing the glory to win their first ever German championship.
