Edinburgh University Men’s Hockey Club won three of the big prizes at the Scottish Hockey Awards last night, taking the Club Team of the Year, Player of the Year and Coach of the Year prizes.
It comes during a groundbreaking spell for the club as they make their EHL debut in Eindhoven in October, becoming the fifth different Scottish men’s club to play in the competition.
It follows their memorable run to the Scottish title, culminating in their 3-1 Grand Final win over Western Wildcats last spring. That success sets the scene perfectly as they celebrate their 125th anniversary this season.
Jamie Golden has been one of their talismen and he was honoured with the Scottish Hockey Player of the Year title.
After a sparkling club season, he enjoyed a red-hot summer as he top-scored at the EuroHockey Championship qualifiers in Rome, adding to the top scorer prize he won at the World Cup qualifiers – he now has 57 goals in 51 international caps.
When he lines out in the EHL, it will be the fourth different club he has represented in the EHL having played for Grove Menzieshill, Surbiton and Western Wildcats.
Indeed, it will be his second event in Eindhoven; Golden and head of performance Neil Allan – who is also the Scottish head coach – were both involved with Menzieshill at the 2019 EHL KO16 at Oranje-Rood.
Allan marries his role with Edinburgh University with the Scottish senior men’s job.
Between him and Golden, they head up a large international contingent at the club. Jamie Croll and Keir Robb were also in Rome for the Euro qualifiers where they won gold along with Jamie Green.
Green joins the club this season after a spell with Der Club an der Alster in the German Bundesliga; he was also player of the tournament at the EuroHockey Under 21 Championship II-B in Czechia.
That side was captained by Rory Steedman and featured fellow Edinburgh players Drew Lobb, Josh Love, Kyle Flockhart, Ollie Wilson and Sam Hunt along with another new signing Angus Millar.
Preseason has seen them defeat Irish champions Lisnagarvey 4-2 and lose 1-0 to Banbridge as they build up to the new season.
