New Gantoise signing Vicky Granatto will arrive at her new club this week with a World Cup gold medal to her name as she helped Argentina win the title in the Wagener Stadium last weekend.
She scored Las Leonas first shoot-out goal in the final against the Netherlands, setting them up for a 3-1 win after normal time ended 1-1.
It makes her one of the potential stars of next Easter’s EHL Women’s event while there were numerous other World Cup medalists from the competition who will play with Europe’s top clubs.
Indeed, it marked a hugely successful tournament for players from the Ghent club as Hélène Brasseur, Alix Gerniers, Ambre Ballenghien, Emilie Verhees and Stephanie Vanden Borre were all part of the Belgian Red Panthers that won an historic bronze medal.
They were joined in the panel by Delphine Marien and Judith Vandermeiren who will line out for KHC Dragons this season in the EHL next Easter.
The Netherlands, meanwhile, ended with silver with a side that featured, from EHL clubs AH&BC Amsterdam’s Anne Veenendaal, Felice Albers, Freeke Moes and Marijn Veen – along with reserve Daantje de Kruijff – and SCHC’s Lisa Post, Yibbi Jansen, Renee van Laarhoven, Marleen Jochems and Pien Dicke.
The tournament also provided a stage to say farewell to one of the all-time greats Xan de Waard who retires from hockey following a glittering career featuring three World Cup golds, five European titles and two Olympic golds.
