England: Masters World Cup

The Masters World Cup tournament in South Africa concluded yesterday and there was a great medal haul for the England teams.

The Women’s 35s took the bronze medal after defeating Australia 4-3 in the 3/4 game having narrowly missed out on the final losing 2-1 to the Netherlands in the semi.

The Women’s 40s were also in the bronze medal match but lost out 2-1 to Chile.

The Men’s 35s won the gold medal after an exciting game with South Africa. Second half goals from Vince Pretorious (2) and Alex Cockram saw England lead 3-1 with 10 minutes to go. The hosts pulled it back to 3-3 but a Tom Kendall goal with a minute left on the clock secured victory.

The Men’s 40s recovered from the disappointment of a loss against South Africa in the semis to beat New Zealand 6-3 in the bronze medal match.

The Men’s 65s took gold after a thrilling final with Netherlands. England led 2-1 for much of the game thanks to goals from Billy Jawanda and Rod Naughalty but Netherlands equalised at the death. However the team shook off this disappointment to win the shootout with only one goal getting past keeper James Felix.

A defeat against Wales in the pool stages denied the Men’s 70s a semi-final spot but they recovered to take 5th place beating the hosts 2-0.

The Men’s 75s finished level on points with Australia in the group stage but beat their Antipodean rivals 3-0 in the final with two goals from Santi Bansal and one from Stephen Stowell.

Congratulations to all players on their selection and participation for their respective sides and thanks also go to the squads’ management teams.

Next the action turns to Auckland where the Women’s 45s, 50s 55s, 60s, 65s & 70s and Men’s 45s, 50s, 55s & 60s teams will compete from the 7-16 November.
