New Delhi, 7th October 2023: The group stage of the 1st Hockey India Sub Junior Men & Women North Zone Championship 2023 concluded today in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh. In the Sub Junior Women’s category, Hockey Haryana secured the top position with 12 points, followed by Uttar Pradesh Hockey at 9 points. Having secured top 2 places in the points table, Hockey Haryana and Uttar Pradesh Hockey confirmed their place in the Final and will face off against one another on Sunday at 1030 hrs.
Hockey Punjab and Hockey Himachal claimed the third and fourth positions with 6 and 3 points respectively, and will play the 3rd/4th place match at 0700 hrs.
In the Sub Junior Men’s category, Uttar Pradesh Hockey emerged as the table toppers with 13 points and a greater goal difference than Hockey Haryana, which finished with 13 points as well. The two teams will now face one another in the Final on Sunday at 1215 hrs. Hockey Punjab and Hockey Chandigarh stood at the third and fourth positions with 9 and 6 points respectively and will lock horns in the 3rd/4th place match at 0845 hrs.
Uttar Pradesh Hockey and Hockey Haryana won the Sub Junior Women’s category matches today at the 1st Hockey India Sub Junior Men & Women North Zone Championship 2023 in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, while Hockey Haryana, Hockey Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh Hockey won their respective games in the Sub Junior Men’s category.
The day’s first match was a tightly contested affair which saw Uttar Pradesh Hockey beat Hockey Punjab by 2-1 in the Sub Junior Women’s category. Lucky Kumari (10’) and Soni Reeti (30’) scored from penalty corners to grant Uttar Pradesh Hockey a two-goal lead. Maskeenpreet Kaur (45’) scored in the last quarter to present Hockey Punjab with a fighting chance but they failed to capitalise further.
Hockey Haryana defeated Hockey Uttarakhand by 9-1 in the second match of the Sub Junior Women’s category. The goal scorers for Hockey Haryana were Captain Diksha (2’), Seema (6’), Chauhan Priya (13’, 26’), Saroha Nancy (16’, 44’), Vanshika (27’), Deswal Jasmine (30’), and Manjinder (60’). Meanwhile, Kumari Shivani (46’) scored the only goal for Hockey Uttarakhand.
Hockey Haryana won the third match against Hockey Uttarakhand by 10-0 in the Sub Junior Men’s category. Karan (8’), Sachin (13’, 27’, 44’), Captain Harsh (15’, 51’), Sonu (35’, 39’), Aditya Kumar (56’) and Rohit Singh (57’) were the goalscorers for Hockey Haryana.
The fourth match ended with Hockey Chandigarh beating Hockey Himachal by 9-0 in the Sub Junior Men’s category. Rajveer Singh (5’, 37’, 48’, 53’) led the goalscoring efforts for Hockey Chandigarh, supported by a hat-trick from Duhan Sahil (12’, 32’, 59’). The rest of the goals were scored by Singh Lovepreet (22’) and Captain Suraj Kumar Sah (59’).
Uttar Pradesh Hockey defeated Hockey Punjab by 7-0 in the last match of the day in the Sub Junior Men’s category. Captain Ali Shahrukh (9’, 19’, 32’, 38’, 39’) led by example, scoring five goals for Uttar Pradesh Hockey. He was assisted in his goalscoring efforts by Saroj Kishan (27’) and Raynee Mohd Atif (48’).
