At the World Cup under 21 in Potchefstroom, the Dutch Juniors worked towards the semi-finals, which are scheduled for Sunday. Meanwhile, six other teams in the back field competed for the highest possible ranking. That has not been a success for Canada: after another defeat, the North Americans finish last.
Canada – Uruguay 1-4
’33 0-1 Oliveros (sc)
’36 0-2 Civetta
’46 0-3 Civetta (sb)
’55 0-4 Ruibal
’59 1-4 Berger
To start with an understatement: it’s not Canada’s tournament. The winner of the Pan-American Cup under 21 years of age is experiencing an extremely disappointing World Cup. Better said: polite, because the tournament is over for the team of coach Beagan Jenn. Canada lost to Uruguay, which made the difference after the break and went on to take a 4-0 lead. Jenna Berger saved the honour, but could not prevent the last (fifteenth) place. Uruguay can still go on for thirteenth place.
Zimbabwe – Austria 0-1
’55 0-1 Bauer
Katharina Bauer passed the verdict on Zimbabwe five minutes before the end. The Austrian thus prevented her team, which received many more corners than Zimbabwe, from having to take shoot-outs again. Austria, the ‘reserve of the reserve’ at this World Cup, therefore keeps its eye on place nine. Zimbabwe, which was swept 18-0 by the Netherlands in the group stage, can at most be eleventh.
Ireland – Malaysia 2-1
’14 1-0 Kelly
’47 1-1 Zulkilfi
’60 2-1 Perdue
Another decision came later in the game between Ireland and Malaysia. The Irish took the lead in the first quarter, but thanks to a hit from Malaysian Nuramirah Zulkilfi, the whole of Potchefstroom prepared for a shoot-out dessert. In the dying seconds , Caoimhe Perdue gave her country the full loot with a striking corner. Result: Ireland competes against Austria for place nine. Malaysia closes the tournament against Zimbabwe.
