NCAA: Singh Names Roster for Pan American Games Santiago 2023

SANTIAGO, Chile – The largest event in the Pan American region is rapidly approaching as all eyes will be on Santiago, Chile this October.

Following the recent tours to Italy, Czech Republic and China, U.S. Men’s National Team Head Coach Harry Singh and coaching staff have named the 16-athlete roster and two provisional athletes that will travel to Santiago, Chile for the Pan American Games Santiago 2023 (PAG) taking place October 25 to November 4.

“After an extensive evaluation following our Europe and China tours, we have carefully selected a formidable blend of experience and youth to represent the U.S. Men’s National Team at the 2023 Pan American Games,” commented Singh. “We believe in their capability to challenge any opponent and are committed to achieving the results that our entire USA hockey fraternity and players aspire to. We understand the significance of the Pan American Games as a qualifying tournament for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and I have no doubt that our team members will give their all to make their dreams a reality.”

The selected roster features a solid core of nine veteran athletes who saw action in the 2019 edition in Peru. Michael Barminski (Ventura, Calif.), Pat Harris (Moorpark, Calif.), Ajai Dhadwal (Agoura Hills, Calif.), Mohan Gandhi (Great Britain) and Aki Kaeppeler (New York City, N.Y.) also represented in 2015 in Canada, with Dhadwal also competed in 2011 in Mexico.

The No. 22 Wolves sit in Pool B with No. 16 Canada, No. 35 Brazil and No. 41 Trinidad and Tobago. Pool A consists of No. 7 Argentina, No. 26 Chile, No. 31 Mexico and No. 42 Peru. USA starts PAG competition with Trinidad and Tobago, an opponent they last faced at the 2022 Pan American Cup (PAC), and narrowly defeated 4-3. Next, they will play Canada who they also played at the 2022 PAC but fell 1-3 in the bronze medal game. Brazil is their final pool game and a squad they haven’t seen since the 2019 3 Nations Invitational in Spain. In that contest, USA went on to win 6-3.

In 2019, the Wolves medaled at the competition for the first time in 24 years after defeating Chile, 2-1, and bringing home bronze.

The winner of the men’s 2023 PAG qualifies for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The teams that come in second and third will be placed in an FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifier in January 2024.
