Pakistan faced defeat in the FIH Hockey Men’s Nations Cup at the hands of South Africa in the third-place game with the score of 4-3.
The first quarter of the game went without a goal. The second quarter went with the scores of 1-1 as Samkelo Mvimbi of South Africa scored the first goal followed by Abubakr Mahmood scoring a goal through a penalty corner for Pakistan levelling the score 1-1.
Mustapha Cassiem scored the second goal for South Africa through a penalty corner in the third quarter of the match followed by another goal for Pakistan by Abdul Rehman which levelled the score once again.
In the fourth quarter, Keenan Horne scored the third goal for South Africa and Cassiem followed with another goal in the 58th minute of the game taking the scorecard to 4-2.
Hannan Shahid tried to save the game with a last-minute goal taking the score to 3-4 but to no avail as the opponents were one goal ahead when the match came to an end.
The last time Pakistan and South Africa played against each other in a hockey game was back in 2022 in the first edition of the FIH Hockey Men’s Nations Cup and South Africa won that game.
Pakistan and South Africa have met 10 times in a hockey game with Pakistan leading the head-to-head with six wins while three have been won by South Africa. One game resulted in a tie.
Pakistan lost to New Zealand with the scores of 2-1 in the first semi-final while the defending champions South Africa saw defeat at the hands of France in the second semi-final of the FIH Hockey Men’s Nations Cup.
New Zealand and France will play the final of the second edition of the FIH Hockey Men’s Nations Cup later today.
