South African indoor hockey legend Justin Domleo has officially announced his retirement from international hockey, bringing the curtain down on an extraordinary career that saw him become the most capped player in SA Indoor Hockey Men’s history. Domleo steps away from the game with 68 official caps, several exhibition matches, and the incredible distinction of being the only South African to compete in four FIH Indoor Hockey World Cups—2015, 2018, 2023, and 2025.
A relentless competitor with an unyielding passion for the game, Domleo’s work rate was second to none, and his commitment to the team was nothing short of sensational. Over the years, he played a crucial role in elevating the national side, pushing the boundaries of what South African indoor hockey could achieve on the global stage. His efforts were rewarded in 2025, when he helped lead the team to a historic bronze medal—South Africa’s first-ever podium finish at a FIH World Cup.
Reflecting on his journey, Domleo described his time with the national team as an immense privilege:
“I have been extremely blessed with a long hockey career, and I feel particularly privileged to have been part of this national team and to play alongside some incredible indoor players over the years. Retiring is a bittersweet moment. I’m obviously sad to step down from the team, but I am also very excited to spend more of my holiday time with my family.”
Domleo also acknowledged the strength of the current squad, praising the blend of youth and experience and the selfless dedication of the management team, many of whom have given their time and energy at personal cost to ensure the team continues to grow.
Interim SA Hockey CEO Shaune Baatjies paid tribute to Domleo’s remarkable career and lasting impact:
“Justin has been a pillar of South African indoor hockey, setting the standard for excellence, commitment, and leadership. His work ethic and passion have been truly inspiring, and his role in helping secure our historic World Cup medal will never be forgotten. Players like Justin don’t come around often, and while we will miss him on the court, his influence on the game will be felt for years to come. We thank him for everything he has done for South African hockey and wish him nothing but the best in this next chapter.”
As South African indoor hockey moves forward, Justin Domleo’s legacy is firmly cemented—not just as the country’s most capped indoor player, but as a leader, a competitor, and a pioneer who helped take the game to new heights. His presence on the court will be missed, but his influence will remain an integral part of South African hockey history
