The South African Indoor Hockey Men have reached new heights, climbing to an all-time high ranking of 6th in the latest FIH Indoor World Rankings. This incredible achievement comes off the back of their historic bronze medal at the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup in Croatia, where they proved their class on the biggest stage.
Their third-place finish was a landmark moment—not just for the team but for African indoor hockey—making them the first side from the continent to claim a medal at the World Cup. Throughout the tournament, the team displayed incredible skill, resilience, and passion, taking down some of the world’s best teams on their way to the podium.
“This is an unbelievable achievement for the squad and a proud moment for SA hockey,” said Justin Rosenberg, Head coach of the SA Indoor Hockey Men, “We worked hard for this, and to see our efforts reflected in the rankings is a massive reward. Hopefully, this inspires the next generation of South African hockey players.”
The jump to 6th place in the world rankings is a testament to the continued rise of indoor hockey in South Africa, driven by a committed group of players, coaches, and staff. The team’s success in Croatia has reinforced South Africa’s status as a genuine contender on the international stage.
SA Hockey Interim CEO Shaune Baaitjies praised the achievement, saying, “This ranking isn’t just about the World Cup—it’s about years of growth and dedication in SA indoor hockey. We’re immensely proud of the squad and excited for what’s to come.”
With their new ranking, the SA Indoor Hockey Men are firmly among the world’s best, and the journey is only just beginning. Bigger and better things lie ahead for this team.
Elsewhere the South African Indoor Hockey Women saw their rank drop to 9th following a 9th place finish at the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup 2025.
