South African Hockey has today announced the South African Indoor Hockey Women’s team for the inaugural Tuanku Zaara Womens International tournament to be held in Malaysia.
The tournament is the first outing for the South African women since the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup in February, where they finished 4th and saw themselves climb to an all-time high of 6th in the world rankings. The tournament will see the South Africans take on the hosts Malaysia, European’s Switzerland, the Oceanic pair of Australia and New Zealand and fellow Africans Namibia.
It is a new beginning for the South African side as both Lennie Botha and Jess O’Connor have retired, the tournament offers the opportunity for AJ Spieringshoek to lead the team for the first time.
“I am incredibly excited about officially starting the journey with the South African Indoor Hockey Women. This is a tremendous opportunity for a number of players to gain exposure to international hockey and is a vital first step as we begin our journey to the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup 2025.”
The team includes nine uncapped players including Bonolo Moabi, Sarah Paget and Tatum Kroutz. While Spieringshoek will be looking to the World Cup trio of Jamie Southgate, Tegan Fourie and Kayla de Waal to lead from the front for the country.
The tournament runs from the 6-11 November 2023. Broadcast details will be communicated on the SA Hockey Social media pages when / if they are made available.
