Monday, October 26 – Cookstown: Cookstown played host to three days of outstanding schoolboy hockey from 21–23 October as 16 of Ireland’s top school teams came together for the 2026 All-Ireland Schoolboys Championship. Hosted by Cookstown High School and Cookstown Hockey Club, the prestigious competition returned to Cookstown for the first time since 1991, culminating in Wesley College retaining the Tasmanian Shield and Royal Belfast Academical Institution (RBAI) successfully defending their Herbie Sharman Trophy.

The tournament began with four pools of four teams, with each side playing the other teams in their pool across the opening two days to determine the semi-finalists.

In Pool A, hosts Cookstown High School made an impressive start in front of their home supporters with a dominant victory over Newtown School, while reigning Tasmanian Shield champions Wesley College defeated RBAI to take second place on goal difference.

Pool B saw Bangor Grammar School defeat The King’s Hospital 2–0, while St Andrew’s College edged past Wallace High School. In Pool C, Banbridge Academy overcame Ashton School, while Newpark School produced a surprise victory over Campbell College. Meanwhile, Sullivan Upper and Friends’ School opened their Pool D campaigns with victories over Bandon Grammar School and The High School respectively.

With semi-final places at stake, the intensity increased throughout the second day as teams battled to secure their places in the knockout stages.

Wesley College strengthened their position in Pool A with a confident victory over Newtown, while a 2–2 draw between Cookstown and RBAI left qualification finely balanced heading into the final round. Wesley subsequently defeated the hosts 3–2 in a thrilling encounter to finish the pool with a perfect record, while RBAI’s 5–1 win over Newtown secured second place.

St Andrew’s College continued their impressive form in Pool B, defeating The King’s Hospital before overcoming Bangor Grammar to finish top of the pool. Wallace High School kept their hopes alive with victories over Bangor and subsequently secured the win required to finish second.

Pool C remained fiercely contested, with Banbridge Academy finishing unbeaten following a 4–1 victory over Newpark. Ashton School recovered from their opening defeat to claim second place after a crucial draw with Campbell College.

In Pool D, Friends’ School came from behind to draw with The High School and finish top of the pool. Bandon Grammar School secured second place following a seven-goal thriller against Sullivan Upper, recovering well from their opening-day defeat.

The pool stage set up an exciting final day, with eight teams progressing to the semi-finals across the two competitions. Pool winners entered the Tasmanian Shield semi-finals, while the second-placed teams competed for a place in the Herbie Sharman Trophy final. The semi-final draw took place on Thursday evening at the traditional All-Ireland Schoolboys dinner, with Minister for Education Paul Givan MLA conducting the draw.

The semi-finals began on Friday morning, with the Herbie Sharman Trophy producing two closely fought contests.

Bandon Grammar School overcame a determined comeback from Ashton School to secure a 2–1 victory and book their place in the final. RBAI, meanwhile, defeated provincial rivals Wallace High School to advance and continue their bid to retain the trophy.

The Tasmanian Shield semi-finals provided further drama. Wesley College faced fierce rivals St Andrew’s College in a tense encounter, with Wesley coming from a goal behind to force a penalty shootout. With supporters from both schools creating a tremendous atmosphere along the sideline, Wesley held their nerve to progress to the final.

In the other semi-final, Friends’ School produced an impressive performance to defeat Banbridge Academy 1–0 in a closely contested battle, setting up a final against the reigning champions.

The Herbie Sharman Trophy final saw RBAI face Bandon Grammar School in the afternoon. Despite a spirited performance from the Munster side, RBAI proved too clinical in front of goal, securing a convincing 6–1 victory.

Their attacking efficiency and ability to build a commanding lead ensured that RBAI successfully defended their title, capping off an excellent tournament with another Herbie Sharman Trophy triumph.

The Tasmanian Shield final brought together Wesley College and Friends’ School, with the reigning champions seeking to secure back-to-back titles.

Wesley made the perfect start, finding the net inside the opening two minutes to take an early lead. They maintained their control throughout the contest and added two further goals in the second half to seal a comprehensive 3–0 victory.

The result confirmed Wesley College as Tasmanian Shield champions for the second consecutive year, rounding off an outstanding campaign in which they won all four of their pool matches before overcoming St Andrew’s College in a dramatic semi-final.

Congratulations to both Wesley College and RBAI on their respective championship victories, and to all 16 participating schools for contributing to three memorable days of competitive schoolboy hockey.
