~ Hockey Jharkhand and Manipur Hockey register wins in Sub Junior Women’s category matches ~
~ Hockey Bihar and Hockey Jharkhand win their respective Sub Junior Men’s category matches ~
New Delhi, 24th September 2023: The opening day of the 1st Hockey India Sub Junior Men & Women East Zone Championship 2023 in Ranchi, Jharkhand, witnessed Hockey Jharkhand and Manipur Hockey registering wins in their respective matches in the Sub Junior Women’s category, while Hockey Bihar and Hockey Jharkhand emerged victorious in their respective games of the Sub Junior Men’s category.
In the opening match of the day, Hockey Jharkhand defeated Hockey Bihar 4-0 in the Sub Junior Women’s category. Saroj Mundri (2’) and Sukarmani Mundu (3’) netted a goal each just after the kick-off whistle to give an early lead to Hockey Bihar, while Leoni Hemrom (48’) converted a penalty corner and Jubaliani Jojo (54’) also found the back of the net to help their team register a comfortable win.
The second match of the day saw Manipur Hockey register a 6-0 win against Hockey Bengal in the Sub Junior Women’s category. Captain Prinja Devi Moirangthem (9’, 11’), Meikam Surviya Devi (12’, 36’), and Bidyaluxmi Devi Hudrom (14’, 50’) scored a brace each for Manipur Hockey.
Hockey Bihar beat Hockey Bengal 5-0 in the Sub Junior Men’s category. Suman Kumar (29’, 45’) and Captain Amrendra Kumar Singh (36’, 53’) netted a brace each, while Sobhit Raj Tiwari (34’) scored a goal to contribute to Hockey Bihar’s win.
The fourth and last match of the day saw Hockey Jharkhand edging out Manipur Hockey 5-4 in the Sub Junior Men’s category. Ashish Purti (11’) scored a goal to put Hockey Jharkhand in front, but a couple of minutes later, Konthoujam Sanjit Singh (13’) put Manipur Hockey back on level terms through a field goal.
However, Amit Kongari (14’) and Hassa Patras (20’) scored a goal each to give the lead to Hockey Jharkhand following which Okram Lanthoiba (21’) and Sanson Singh Sorokhaibam (40’) netted a goal each to help Manipur Hockey bounce back in the game.
The drama continued in the final quarter of the match as Tintus Hemrom (48’) found the back of the net to put Hockey Jharkhand in front in the closing minutes of the match, but Manipur Hockey Captain Sushil Lisham (57’) converted a penalty corner to help his team level the score once again. Notably, it was Hassa Patras (59’) who scored his second goal of the match, and that too in the dying minutes of the game to ensure a hard-fought victory for Hockey Jharkhand.
