Scotland: Super sixties have gong in sights

This year’s European Masters Champions – Scotland’s over 60s women – have been named as finalists in the Scottish Women in Sport Awards.

The Scottish Masters Hockey squad is up for the Team of the Year award, following their historic victory in Valencia in July. The super 60s drew 1-1 with England in the final, and won on running penalties.

Captain Ali MacFarlane, who won Olympic Bronze with the GB squad in 1992, described the win as “right up there with the sweetest sporting moments I’ve experienced.

“I think when you’re a bit older, there is a lot more to deal with and consider. The key to our success was that every single player stepped up and performed to the best of their ability throughout the tournament – but especially in the final. Securing that gold medal was a real squad effort without togetherness on and off the pitch decisive. Every one of the team had peaks and troughs in run up to the European Championships, but we ended on a high. We are delighted and humbled to be nominated for this award.”

The 16-strong squad of players was coached by Ali’s GB team-mate and fellow Olympian Wendy Justice. On route to the final they beat Ireland, Belgium and an England LX side and drew with Wales. Wendy also took to the pitch as a player – and scored the winning running penalty.

She said: “This was a cohesive team which had the mind-set that gold was achievable. They trusted in each other, and in the leadership. Players loved being alongside similarly-minded, capable and determined team-mates and cherished every aspect of this tournament. All this was a winning combination.”

The Scottish Women in Sport Awards recognise and celebrate the hard work, dedication and commitment that enables young girls and women to participate in every aspect of sporting life. This year’s ceremony takes place on Friday 24th November at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow, when the winners will be revealed.

SMH President Bernie Morrison said he’s proud of the Euro Champs no matter the result on the night. He said: “The W60s have gradually moved up the places on the podium to record a first-ever gold medal for our women’s squads. They are a shining example to any team, and proof that age is just a number. Their determination and togetherness deserves to be recognised and celebrated.”

The gold-medal winning squad featured players from 13 hockey clubs across the UK. Selection is currently underway for season 23/24, with the World Masters Hockey World Cup taking place in New Zealand in November 2024. Find out more about eligibility, how you can trial for Scotland, and keep an eye on selection dates on our calendar.
