Hockey New Zealand is proud to announce the winners of the 2025 Vantage Black Sticks Annual Awards. An annual celebration recognising individual excellence, professionalism, and contribution within the Hockey New Zealand high-performance environment.
These awards honour players who have consistently demonstrated exceptional performance, leadership, and commitment throughout the international season (October 2024 – September 2025). Representing New Zealand at the highest level requires significant sacrifice and discipline, and these awards highlight those who have set the standard both on and off the field.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR – CHARLIE MORRISON
Morrison’s rise through the Black Sticks ranks has been nothing short of impressive. Across the 2025 season, he showcased world-class consistency, elite defensive skill, and growing leadership within the group.
“Charlie has been one of our most consistent and influential players this year. His defensive performances have been world-class, and he continues to grow as a leader both on and off the field. He sets high standards, mentors younger players, and consistently performs at a level that drives the team forward.” (from the player group).
PLAYER OF THE YEAR – GRACE O’HANLON
O’Hanlon’s performances throughout 2025 were nothing short of outstanding. From back-to-back shootout wins at the Nations Cup and Oceania Cup, to her steady leadership behind the defensive line, she continues to set the benchmark for excellence in New Zealand hockey.
“Grace has delivered world-class performances all season. Her leadership, composure, and competitive edge have transformed the team’s belief and standards. She inspires those around her and consistently performs when it matters most. A true reflection of what it means to be a Black Stick.” (from the player group).

Player of the Year (Staff Vote) – Recognising consistent high performance, professionalism, and leadership across the season.
Players’ Player of the Year (Players’ Vote) – Awarded by teammates to the individual who best exemplifies excellence, impact, and consistency.
Team Values Award (Combined Vote) – Honouring the player who best represents the team’s culture, commitment, and values.
These awards celebrate not just athletic achievement, but also the qualities that define what it means to represent New Zealand.
