New Zealand: India Joins Expanded Summer of Hockey Series as Dunedin Prepares for Five Nation Showcase

Dunedin is set to host even more world-class international hockey this summer, with Hockey New Zealand confirming that India will join the upcoming January Summer of Hockey series; transforming the originally planned Four Nations event into a thrilling Five Nations spectacular.

The addition of India, combined with the introduction of a New Zealand A (NZA) side, elevates the Summer of Hockey into one of the most exciting international tournaments hosted in Aotearoa in recent years. Fans can now look forward to six match days, featuring powerhouse performances from New Zealand, USA, Japan, Korea, India, and NZA.

“This is an incredible opportunity for Dunedin sports fans,” said Michelle Hollands, CEO Hockey NZ. “Adding India – one of the world’s most passionate hockey nations – and creating space for our NZA side to go head-to-head with leading international teams is a huge win for the sport and for our community. It means more competition, more development, and more unforgettable moments for fans.”

Expanded Format, Bigger Opportunities

What began as a four-day fixture has grown into a six-day international festival of hockey. The expanded schedule ensures greater playing opportunities for teams while giving spectators more chances to witness high-intensity international matchups.

For the NZA squad, the series offers a valuable platform to test themselves against top-tier nations, building depth and experience within New Zealand’s high-performance pathway. With India joining the lineup, the level of competition rises even further—setting the stage for fast-paced, skilful, and fiercely contested hockey.
