EHF: Belgium and Germany make waves in Krefeld and Poland shine in Swansea

Day two of the Girls EuroHockey U18 Championship saw Belgium continue their winning start while Germany started their campaign with a success. In Swansea, Maria Drozda inspired Poland on day one.

Here’s a round-up of the day’s action.

Girls EuroHockey U18 Championship (Krefeld, Germany)

Pool A

Belgium 5 Ireland 1

Belgium kept up their perfect record as they recovered from an early deficit to defeat Ireland 5-1. Rebecca Carthy had given the junior green army the lead in spectacular style, volleying home a head-high ball.

Mien Palfliet equalised quickly from a corner and then Hélène Delva put her side in front when given space on the right baseline. Louise van Hecke added another corner rebound and Lisl Denef’s lovely deflection made it 4-1. Louise Dewaet completed the win with a fine team goal.

Belgium sit top of the group with six points while Ireland are yet to register.

Germany 4 Scotland 0

Three goals in a five-minute spell around the end of the first and start of the second quarter saw Germany power their way to a winning start against Scotland.

Lena Keller’s goal in the 14th minute, a neat touch from a right-wing cross, and another in ther 17th minute set up the lead. Then Julia Boehringer’s powerful drag-flick made it 3-0 with just 19 minutes gone.

And it remained that way until 11 minutes from the finish when Friederike Seifert scored a corner goal to close out a comfortable 4-0 win.

Just one game takes place on Monday with the Germans back in action against France. Otherwise, Pool B takes centre stage with the Netherlands facing England and Spain playing Austria.
