EHL: Hertzberger breaks Dutch scoring record

Jeroen Hertzberger became the all-time top goalscorer in the Dutch men’s Hoofdklasse last weekend when his tip-in with six seconds to go earned HC Rotterdam a 4-0 win over hdm.

It was his second of the game, adding to a penalty stroke earlier on, and saw him jump to 347 in total, moving him one ahead of Roderick Weusthof.

It added another remarkable record to the 37-year-old’s list, the goal coming in his 19th season with the club. He is already well clear at the top of the Euro Hockey League’s men’s goalscorers lists with 40 to his name.

And he insists there is still plenty left in the tank following a rapid start to this season in front of goal.

‘I am not finished yet,” he told hockey.nl. “I now have 11 in 8 games. I plan to maintain this average. So do the math!”

Speaking about his desire to find the net, he simplifies it down neatly: “The more goals I score, the greater the chance that we will win.

“Choosing a position is more important than scoring. All the top strikers you see have one thing in common. Whether that is Mirco Pruijser or Erling Haaland.

“They have a sense of position. Step one is being at the right spot. The way they score isn’t the hardest part. They are not long shots. Always being there, like with my second goal today. It’s a percentage game.”

The win has Rotterdam in fifth place, level on 15 points with fourth placed SV Kampong. Pinoké continue to lead the way but did drop their first points of the season when they were held 1-1 by bottom-ranked Schaerweijde.
