EHL: Moes magic lights up Amsterdam victory

AH&BC Amsterdam are back in the ABN AMRO EHL Women’s GRAND FINAL for a second time following their hard fought 2-1 win over Dutch rivals SCHC.

It was a match lit up by Freeke Moes’s brilliant backhand shot to make it 2-0, adding to Maria Verschoor’s opening effort. Yibbi Jansen got one back in the last minute but it was too late to affect the outcome.

Overally, it was tough contest with a lot of physicality and many penalty corners and it was through this avenue Amsterdam went in front. It was not a classic routine as Sabine Plönissen adjusted well and then worked the ball to Sonja Zimmerman and on to Moes on the left baseline.

She bounced the ball across to where Verschoor was on hand to tip in.

Moes was then set free by Michelle Fillet in their own half and she out-paced the defence and brilliantly turned the ball onto her reverse-stick and picked a perfect angle to hit the backboard.

SCHC had their chances with Pien Dicke knocking Famke Richardson’s cross just off target while they stayed in contention thanks to a couple of fine Alexandra Heerbaart saves.

Anne Veenendaal did likewise to keep Jansen at bay until 37 seconds from the end when she finally found the backboard. It was too late, though, to change the course of the result and Amsterdam kept alive their dream of a second EHL title.
