Netherlands: Top scorers: can Jansen keep Matla from fifth top scorer title?

Next weekend – during the last round of regular competition – the battle for the top scorer title will be decided in the Tulip big league. With the women the battle is between Frédérique Matla and Yibbi Jansen, with the men there are no less than five contenders for the honorary title.

Tulip Women’s big league

Thanks to a hat-trick against Huizen (10-1), Den Bosch attacker Frédérique Matla goes into the final round of play with a slight lead. The goalgetter boosted her goal total to 22, one more than SCHC’s Yibbi Jansen, the only remaining competitor. Matla already captured the top scorer title four times in her career: in 2019-2020 (25 goals), 2020-2021 (24 goals), 2021-2022 (35) and 2023-2024 (27 goals).

Jansen contributed two goals to SCHC’s 0-6 win at Rotterdam last weekend. With that win, the team from Bilthoven set a new goal record in their big league history. This season the counter stands at 78 goals after 21 games. The previous peak was 75 goals, achieved in both 2015-2016 and 2022-2023. SCHC concludes the league Saturday with a home game against HDM.

Tulip big league men

With one round of play remaining, as many as five players still have a chance at the top scorer title. Boris Burkhardt (Amsterdam) and Timo Boers (Den Bosch) both added one goal to their total and now stand at 27 goals. Miles Bukkens moved one step closer to the list leaders after his two goals against Hurley. With 26 goals, the Pinoké striker equaled a club record set by Justin Reid-Ross. He scored 26 goals for the Dutchmen in the 2011-2012 season. Bukkens can only get his hands on the record next Sunday if he scores in the final match against Bloemendaal.

Jip Janssen (Kampong) and Jeroen Hertzberger (Rotterdam) also still have a chance at the top scorer title. Hertzberger failed to score at SCHC (1-2 win), while Janssen scored his 24th goal of the season at Nijmegen. That goal had a golden touch: it was his 150th goal in the Dutch big league. On behalf of Kampong only Paul Litjens (267), Tom van ‘t Hek (206) and Constantijn Jonker (177) scored more goals in the big league.

Top scorer Noud Borsten will have to wait a while for a first. The Push defender did not score in the away game with Tilburg (5-2 defeat) and remained on 29 goals. Borsten may become the first player to reach the 30-goal mark in the Promotion League, which started in 2018. By the way, in the game with Tilburg, the penalty corner man of the Breda team had to watch how his only rival did get a big step closer: Pim Haring scored twice and reduced the gap with Borsten to three goals.
