It's the Men's and Women's Field Hockey Team's Turn to Perform at the 32nd SEA Games

The Field Hockey Event, SEA Games 2023 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia will open on May 9 to 16, 2023 at the Morodok Techo National Stadium. The last time this event was contested was at the SEA Games 2017, Kuala Lumpur where Malaysia was the champion for the men’s and women’s categories.

For this edition, for the Men’s Team, they will line up 14 teenage players and will be assisted by four senior players who have experience playing on the international stage while for the Women’s Team, they will feature a 19-year-old young player.

Mohd Zaimi Mat Deris (goalkeeper), Muhammad Amirul Hamizan Azahar (defence), Muhammad Najib Abu Hassan (midfielder) and Muhamad Ramadan Rosli (forward) are four experienced players who will help guide the other young boys while Azmyra Mia Sofea Azhairy the youngest female player to make an appearance with the national team at the 32nd SEA Games.

Previously, the National Men’s and Women’s Teams have done a series of preparations ahead of the 2023 SEA Games to ensure that the set target of bringing home the gold medal is successfully paid off. This includes the Youth Team participating in the Perth Austalia Tour Series while the Women’s Team participated in the International Invitational Tournament at the Wujin Hockey Training Center, China.

The Head Coach of the National Youth Team, Muhamad Amin Rahim, explained that his team’s preparations are now at their best and the players are fully prepared to start the 2023 SEA Games Campaign against the host, Cambodia in the opening action.

“We, the coaching staff, always remind the players not to underestimate the strengths of each competing team and every time they go into action, the players need to go with the right mindset in addition to having the mentality to win every game.

“The hope and target set by the team is of course to present a gold medal to the Malaysian contingent. But for the team, we come to the SEA Games with a “double-edged sword” strategy where we will also use this game as one of the preparations for the team ahead of the Asian Youth Cup (Men) in Salalah, Oman which will start on May 23.

“I sincerely hope that the players will give their best throughout the Games and make the best use of this Games for the final preparations towards the Asian Youth Cup Championship later,” explained the first-time Head Coach for the field hockey event at the SEA Games.

Meanwhile, the Head Coach of the National Women’s Squad, Mohd Nasihin Nubli Ibrahim, described that he and his coaching team did not want to think about Malaysia’s reputation at the last games and the label as the team of choice at this time, besides that his team will still respect every opponent they will face.

“The criteria for selecting players to go to the SEA Games is more about the ability of players to adapt with a fast game, make good decisions, have good technique and have a positive mindset.

“The coaching staff, officials and players have a high desire and motivation in hunting for a gold medal in Cambodia. To ensure that the team does not get undue pressure, we do not want to think about the old reputation of the Malaysian team or the status that is placed as the favorite team.

“Our focus will be fully on the match and go down with a win, however, we still respect the opposing team and never underestimate the credibility they have.

“For the 2023 SEA Games, only four players have experience playing in the previous edition in the field hockey event. For the other players, they have experience playing on the international stage such as the 2022 Asian Cup, the 2022 Junior World Cup and the recent China Invitational.

“The experience gained by each player certainly helps to increase their confidence and prepare for the SEA Games. This time the SEA Games will also feature a 19-year-old young player, Azmyra Mia Sofea,” he said.
